How to Start Making Good Decisions in Every Part of Your Business

You can’t get around the law of sowing and reaping.

The current state of your business is directly related to the choices you’ve made in the past.

So how can you sow better seeds and reap a bountiful harvest?

There are many things (rising material costs, supply chain issues, government regulations) that are out of your control.

You have to learn to live with and adapt to them as best as you can.

But, there are many things that are in your control.

Here’s just three:

1. Which projects you bid
2. Who you hire and partner with
3. How you plan and build your work

If:

You choose risky work,

tolerate low-performing employees,

and allow sloppy execution.

Then:

your margins,

your morale,

and your reputation will all suffer.

Here’s how to start making better decisions in all parts of your business:

A. Schedule four (4) two-hour meetings with your executive team.
(The more I work with construction companies the more convinced I am that shorter meetings are best)

B. Dedicate one of the four meetings to each of the main areas in your construction business:

1. Get Work;
2. Plan Work;
3. Build Work;
4. Get Paid.

C. In each meeting, during the 1st hour, ask:

“What shall we START doing, STOP doing, do LESS of, do MORE of.”

Make a list of those ideas.

D. In the 2nd hour of the meeting:

1. Take the list of ideas that you have made
2. Prioritize the list in order of importance and impact
3. Build a one-page plan with specific people accountable to executing the plan.

E. Meet every week with the people accountable for executing the plan and ask them three questions:

1. Did you do it?
2. If not, why not?
3. How can I help?

Follow this simple outline and you’ll immediately begin to make better decisions that will result in a better outcome.
