6 Ways to Be an Effective Leader

6 Ways to Be an Effective Leader

You don’t have to be a 🚀 scientist to lead.

Here are six things to focus on:

  1. Consistent Communication
  2. Clear Communication
  3. Set Expectations and Deadlines
  4. Hold People Accountable
  5. Recognition
  6. Set Goals

1. Consistent Communication

Don’t just talk to your people when there’s an issue, make sure you’re talking to them all the time so that when something comes up, you have enough of a relationship built to effectively address the issue.

2. Clear Communication

When you’re in a conversation, if you are unclear, ask yourself: “what’s one more question I can ask?”

If they seem to be unclear, ask yourself:

“what’s one more piece of information I can give?”

3. Set Expectations and Deadlines

Make sure that everyone’s clear on what you want to be done (expectations) and when you want it done (deadlines).

If you don’t do both don’t be surprised when your expectations are not met.

4. Hold People Accountable

Something’s gone wrong, you’ve got to have the conversation, here are the questions to ask:

  • What went wrong?
  • How are you going to fix it?
  • What would you do differently next time?

5. Recognition

If something positive happens, recognize it.

Look the person in the eye and specifically explain the positive impact of their actions.

6. Set Goals

Do it with all your direct reports. In construction, there are two types of goals.

People specific:

For example, if someone needs to get better technically, set a goal for them in the next year, and work with them to improve their technical skills.

Project specific:

Make sure that they understand what they need to focus on in order to bring the project in on time and under budget.

None of this is new information. But it’s not what you know, it’s what you do that counts.

Challenge yourself to improve in:

  1. Consistent Communication
  2. Clear Communication
  3. Set Expectations and Deadlines
  4. Hold People Accountable
  5. Recognition
  6. Set Goals
