Mark Whitson’s path from college graduate working with tools to president of one of America’s most respected construction companies wasn’t scripted. In this episode, he reveals the turning points that shaped his career and the leadership principles that have kept top talent at DPR for decades.
The Power of Starting at the Bottom
Whitson’s journey began with a humbling decision. Fresh out of Purdue with a civil engineering degree, he joined DPR’s self-perform crew instead of taking a traditional office role. This choice taught him invaluable lessons about bridging the gap between craft workers and administrative staff.
Key lessons from the field:
- Learning Spanish to communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking craft workers
- Understanding that field employees have as much to teach office workers as vice versa
- Breaking down intimidation barriers that exist between different roles
- Recognizing that everyone brings unique value regardless of their position

Career Development: The Rock Wall vs. Ladder Approach
DPR views career progression differently from most companies. Instead of climbing a straight ladder, Whitson likens it to navigating a rock wall, where you sometimes need to go sideways or even down to reach your goal.
This approach teaches three crucial principles:
- There will be obstacles requiring creative solutions
- Your destination might not be immediately accessible
- Sometimes the path is easier than you think if you’re willing to try
Building Culture That Lasts Generations
With DPR now 35 years old and transitioning from second to third generation leadership, maintaining culture becomes critical. Whitson emphasizes that culture can’t depend on one person or even a few leaders.
DPR’s culture preservation strategies:
- Everyone owns the culture, not just leadership
- Regular “Culture Con” sessions across all offices
- Onboarding that emphasizes shared values from day one
- Character Matters training that addresses real-world integrity challenges
Retention Through Empowerment
When asked why top performers stay at DPR instead of chasing higher offers elsewhere, Whitson points to fundamental differences in company philosophy:
- Shared leadership instead of hierarchical control
- Team-based decision making rather than individual authority
- “One DPR” mentality that creates genuine camaraderie
- Empowerment to walk away from projects that don’t align with company values
Developing Future Leaders
Preparing the next generation requires more than technical training. Whitson focuses on building “enterprise leaders” who can navigate design, prefabrication, logistics, trades, VDC, and emerging technologies.
Critical development elements:
- Clear success criteria for stretch assignments
- Internal coaching and support systems
- Permission to fail in ways that promote growth
- Continuous conversation about opportunities and challenges
Leadership Legacy
Whitson’s personal purpose centers on “helping others turn the perceived impossible into possible.” Rather than thinking about legacy, he focuses on creating opportunities for people to challenge their own limits and find new ways to achieve their goals.

Mark Whitson is President of DPR Construction and a member of its Leadership Team. Passionate about helping people achieve what seems impossible, he thrives on building high-performing teams and breaking through obstacles.
Mark began his DPR career after graduating from Purdue, starting as a laborer on a self-perform crew. From there he worked as a Project Engineer, PX, and Business Unit Leader, eventually becoming Southeast Regional Leader before stepping into his current role. Today, he focuses on integrating DPR’s Family of Companies and driving improvements in core construction operations.
His career has deep personal meaning—especially after his father’s cancer diagnosis, which connected him to his earlier work building healthcare projects.
Away from the office, Mark enjoys time with his wife (his fifth-grade sweetheart) and their three children. A sports fan and traveler, he also loves golf—even if he insists he’s not great at it.
